WFC Gears for World Cup in Ghana
Tuesday, April 27, 2010  Printer Friendly Email this article

The World Future Council (WFC) is putting on their cleats and heading to Ghana to enjoy a viewing of the World Cup using solar energy. The entire duration of the major sporting event will be televised in Oboadaka, Ghana, powered by solar energy.

The WFC will also use this time to host a workshop on renewable energy policies for sustainable African development. WFC, partnered with Energiebau Sunergy Ghana Ltd., will also enable a community hospital to attain permanent and reliable electricity supply using renewable energy.

The event is aimed at:

  • giving hands-on experience to sensitize and educate decisionmakers in politics, business, civil society and the media on the advantages of renewable energy
  • countering prejudices about renewable energies as "niche technologies"
  • motivating the Power Kick for Africa workshop participants to use this event as an entry point for the development and implementation of renewable energy policies for powering education and medication in rural areas
  • celebrating the hand-over of the solar PV-system to the clinic of Oboadaka by Energiebau Sunergy Ghana

The village, lacking access to electricity, has about 1,000 residents and is located about an hour outside of the capital Accra. In addition to the opportunity to support its national team, Black Stars, the hands-on learning experience using renewable energy will be the most beneficial in the long-run.
