South Africa saw its solar market bring 509 MW of PV installations online in 2016. The addition of the 509 MW brought the country’s cumulative PV capacity to 1.47 GW.

According to a report released by the country’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) this was a huge increase over the previous two years. CSIR said that newly installed capacity for 2015 was only 5 MW, while 2014 was 750 MW.
