Spain has placed solar panels in its municipal cemetery in the Barcelona suburb of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
Densely populated, many are buried in high mausoleums stacked on top of one another reaching four or five levels high with the photovoltaic panels placed on top. The panels placed are connected by cables that guide the electricity into a small transformer station at the top of the cemetery hill and connect to tall electrical towers nearby.
Esteve Serret, whose firm is in charge of the project said, "You have a large surface, with no chance of shadows on it that would reduce the energy production." He said that the cemetery currently provides enough electricity to power 60 homes.
While more solar panels are planned for the cemetery, Serret noted that many other cities in Spain and Mexico have expressed interest in installing cemetery solar panels.
