Genale Dawa III to be Inaugurated Before Year End

Ethiopia plans to inaugurate its Genale Dawa III hydroelectric plant before the end of 2019 according to an announcement by the communications director at Ethiopia Electric Power, Moges Mekonen.

The 254-MW plant is being constructed by China Gezhouba Group Corporation on the Genale Dawa River in the Oromia region. The cost of setting it up is $450 million, 60% of which was provided by the Exim Bank of China in the form of a loan and the remaining 40% by the Ethiopian government.

Production from the hydroelectric plant will be sold to the national electricity grid.

The construction of this plant covers one facet of the energy policy of the country which aims to increase its capacity of 4,200 MW to 17,300 MW, by 2020, using a mix of alternative energy technologies.
