China to Pony-Up $214 Million for Rwandan Hydropower

According to reports, China’s Export-Import Bank (EximBank) will build a new 43.5-MW hydropower plant in Rwanda at a cost of about $214 million. Once online, the plant will help reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources and stabilize the grid.

The project is expected to take around five years to complete. The project will also include a substation and a 110KV transmission line covering 19.2 km from the plant to the Rulindo substation.

“In addition to the current 224 MW generation capacity, combined with the pipeline of power projects, [Nyabarongo II Hydropower] will increase grid generation capacity to an estimated 513.5 MW,” Finance Minister Uzziel Ndagijimana said in a statement.
