Ahead of Egypt’s preparation to host the next Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 27) in November 2022, the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD) is preparing to publish the world’s largest international tender for rooftop solar for the country’s New Administrative Capital (NAC).
Project execution is planned to begin this year and completion is expected in 2023.
The project will make use of the rooftops in a number of buildings in the new city’s residential districts to install photovoltaic solar cells to generate electricity with a planned capacity of 130 MW. Winners of the tender will enter into Power Purchase Agreements.
This tender comes as the second phase of the Photovoltaic Rooftops Project under NAC in collaboration with the city development partners, chiefly the Ministry of Housing & Urban Communities and the Engineering Authority.
Phase one was announced in 2019 and included outfitting the rooftops of government buildings with solar PV panels. Around 10 MW of this project has already been completed.
ACUD aims to depend on the solar energy resources to generate 30% to 35% of consumed electricity for the city.
Clean and Affordable Energy is the 7th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that ACUD plans to try and achieve in line with the Egyptian government’s strategy
