EU Invests €400M in Tanzania

The EU said that it planned to give Tanzania €385 million for budget support and infrastructure projects in the East African nation. Tanzania’s economy is among Africa’s highest recipients of aid per capita with 33% of its 9.51 trillion shilling budget for 2009-2010 coming from external sources.

"The EU member states have approved the 2009 Annual Action Program for Tanzania, which includes four separate programs worth a total of €385 million," the EU delegation to Tanzania said in a statement.

The delegation said that €305 million would go towards general budget support, €70 million for road construction, and €8 million for renewable energy, especially in rural areas.

The finance ministry will receive the remaining €2 million to boost its ability to tackle poverty issues, it said.

Last week, Sweden said it would give some $230 million for budgetary support between 2009 and 2013.
