Namibia-China JV to Build Luderitz Wind Farm

Namibia’s state power firm NamPower has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) and a transmission connection agreement with CERIM Lüderitz Energy for the development of the 50-MW Lüderitz Wind Power Plant.

In a Twitter announcement, NamPower states the project will be executed on a Build-Own-Operate Basis, including the associated transmission connection infrastructures required to connect the power plant to the Namibian Grid.

Under the 25-year PPA, NamPower will be the sole electricity off-taker from the wind farm projected to come online in 2025. This facility, along with other renewable energy projects, are expected to significantly reduce the volume of energy it currently imports from the Southern African Power Pool.

NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu stated that the project, “will contribute significantly to our supply portfolio when combined with other generation projects that form part of the ISBP (Integrated Strategy and Business Plan).

The project falls under the NamPower Integrated Strategy and Business Plan for 2020–2025 which calls for adding 150 MW of power generation internally and another 70 MW from Independent Power Producers.  The power plant, which will cost approximately N$1.40 billion, will be located about 16km south of Lüderitz Town.

CERIM Lüderitz Energy is a joint venture between China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) and Namibian firm Riminii Investments.
