Malawi Issues Invitation to Tender for a Solid Waste Recycling Project

The Government of Malawi, through Blantyre Water Board and Blantyre City Council is seeking expression of interest by consultants for the development of a solid waste recycling facility and engineered landfill in Blantyre City.

Financial support for the project has been secured from the International Development Agency (IDA) of the World Bank toward the cost of the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project-1 (MWSP-1) and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services.

The project development objective of the MWSP-1 is to increase access to improved water and sanitation services in Blantyre metropolitan area and to enhance the operational and financial efficiency of Blantyre Water Board. One of the activities under component 1 of the project is to construct a new solid waste treatment site comprising a recycling facility and an engineered landfill in Chigumula as well as all-weather access road into the land fill. However, before the actual works, there is need for consultancy services for the same.

The consultant will carry out the feasibility study, the preliminary and detailed design, and construction supervision of the solid waste treatment site. The assignment is expected to start in October 2023 and should be completed within 40 months. Expressions of interest should be submitted by August 4.
