High Grand Falls Dam Contract Awarded

The National Irrigation Authority of Kenya has signed a project development agreement (PDA) with British construction firm GBM Limited to undertake final project studies for the High Grand Falls Dam and associated hydropower facility.

Once completed the dam will provide water volumes exceeding 5.6 billion cubic meters to irrigate about 400,000 acres of land while generating up to 1,000 megawatts of hydropower.

The dam will not only be Africa’s second largest freshwater dam after the Aswan dam in Egypt built along River Nile, but also the single biggest government undertaking aimed at significantly addressing the perennial challenges of food security, domestic water and power.

The PPP Committee will then conduct an evaluation and determination on the contract award, financial close and concession agreement.
