India Pumps $$$ into Southern Africa’s Electricity Generation

The Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) industry is being affected by southern Africa’s insufficient power generation, and India is taking action to increase power generation to help meet the region’s needs.

Indian Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari has signed agreements with southern African countries including Zambia and Malawi for electric power generation and renewable energy projects. The project will attempt to connect all African countries to satellite and fiber-optic networks while also providing computer training programs to Botswana and South Africa.

India will withdraw from the project after five years to allow African countries to run the program using their own financial means and human resources.

It will be interesting to see if the programs remain afloat after the planned five-year Indian support period has ended.
