Subsidies Spike RE Demand across Europe

Incentive programs are contributing to the rise in renewable energy implementations with many European countries like German, France, and Italy offering residents and businesses cash subsidies.

One company noticing the increase is Evergreen Solar. "There’s a lot of opportunity in this region. Not only is this the energy of the future, but it’s sunny there," said Thomas Hofmann, who’s been promoted from directing sales in Germany to directing sales for all of Europe. The company has also created a new vice president-level position to oversee sales and marketing in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The company is delving further into large-scale solar projects, recently launching its largest installation that included a 5-MW system in Italy that will provide power for more than 2,400 homes. The company is looking to continue its expansion into the Middle East and eventually into Africa. The company’s annual revenue in 2009 totaled $267.1 million, a 180% increase over the previous year.
