More Clarification Needed for SA’s Refit

Renewable energy associations are asking the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to clearly define the program’s project selection criteria.

Representatives from the South African Wind Energy Association (Sawea) and the Southern Africa Solar Thermal and Electricity Association (Sastela) are calling for more clarity on important matters like the technicalities of the bidding process and what is expected from developers. Sawea Deputy Chairman Mark Tanton said the rules shouldn’t be ambiguous and as of now, the Refit doesn’t provide a clear path for power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Sastela interim chairperson Pancho Ndebele said that Nersa should revisit the figure of 875 MW of renewable energy by 2013, as it did not promote the growth of the renewable energy industry.
