Nigerian Leader Calling for Decentralized Power Distribution

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan called for the Nigerian government to decentralize power distribution in hopes of amping up the country’s power generation at the Delta Diaspora Direct conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.

He noted that the centralization that the country currently has in place is only hindering the productivity of its states. Uduaghan said at the summit that Delta State had contributed about N3.9 billion to the independent power projects (IPP) initiative. While Delta State has private energy projects in place, the governor said the region had failed to see any benefits as a result.

On March 30, Alternative Energy Africa reported that the US was stepping in to help drive Nigeria’s efforts for IPPs (US and Nigeria Working for IPPs). Nigeria’s Minister of State for Power Nuhu Way said that the federal government is expected to release a comprehensive blueprint on the development of the West African country’s power sector very soon – although the timeliness of this blueprint has not been released and if past actions are any indicator, it will be a surprise as to when it is released. However, the biggest surprise will be to see if it is actually implemented.
