GE Signs on for Great Lakes Offshore Wind

As announced by Alternative Energy Africa, officials in Ohio outlined plans to bring offshore wind power to the Great Lakes. GE and Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) of Northern Ohio announced on Monday that they would partner for the beginning of the first fresh water offshore wind farm in the US.

GE will provide offshore wind turbines and maintenance for an initial 20-MW wind farm. Upon its completion, expected in late 2012, subsequent projects with a long-term goal of 1,000 MW will follow until 2020. GE and LEEDCo will create a strategic plan to identify opportunities for cost reduction to make offshore wind energy in the Great Lakes economically viable. GE and LEEDCo will also work jointly on advocacy and public policy issues to increase support for offshore wind energy, and accelerate the growth of America’s offshore wind industry.
