Geothermal Energy Could Power another African Country

The archipelago island nation of Comoros, located off the eastern coast of Africa, could become self-sufficient based upon its geothermal energy potential.

Australian company Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) and New Zealand-based Gafo Energy has partnered to explore the island’s geothermal potential. Gafo said that it would invest €120 million to survey and install a geothermal project with SKM to carry out the research, survey, and analysis phase. SKM will look into three of Comoros’ islands: Grand Comore, Moheli, and Anjouan. In late 2009, the Comoros government gave Gafo exclusive rights for the island’s geothermal projects as the country is completely dependent upon diesel-generated energy.
