Chevron Continues RE Ventures

Chevron Nigeria Ltd.’s Managing Director Andrew Fawthrop presented his company’s case to better meet the world’s growing demand for sustainable energy at the Oil and Gas Technical and Exhibition Conference held in Lagos, Nigeria as part of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Tech conference held from June 8-10.

Fawthrop said Chevron is diversifying its portfolio by upping its research and development for “alternative and renewable energy technologies that are sustainable and profitable.” He added that the company recognizes that all sources of energy from wind to solar to fossil fuels need to be harnessed and developed in order to meet the increasing global demand.

In March, Chevron introduced Project Brightfield, a demo of next-generation solar energy technologies in Bakersfield, Calif. The project will evaluate seven emerging photovoltaic (PV) technologies to help determine the best RE application at other Chevron facilities. The 7,700 solar panels on the 8-acre site will generate approximately 740 kW of electricity. The produced power will be directed to the local utility grid as well as to Chevron’s oil production operations at the Kern River Field. This is the company’s second project within the US in an effort to integrate RE into its operations with the first being a wind farm on a former Texaco refinery site in Wyoming using 11 wind turbines to generate 16.5 MW of power. Further plans to incorporate RE are underway with a CSP installation at a facility in New Mexico, expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Other projects in the works include a memorandum of understanding between Chevron Qatar Energy Technology and GreenGulf Inc. for a joint study to test solar energy technologies and their application in Qatar. The project will collect and evaluate the data provided by technologies located at a 35,000 sq meter solar test site at the Qatar Science & Technology Park.
