NEPAD Summit to Address Energy Infrastructure

The New Partnership for Africa’s Development will host a summit in Johannesburg from October 13-15 where African business leaders will get together to discuss infrastructure strategies to boost the continent’s economy.

Included in the talks will be energy developments with other relevant topics to be discussed in order to make Africa more competitive to its Western counterparts. The World Bank estimated that additional funding will be needed over the next decade to address infrastructural problems within the continent with the biggest portion of the budget needing to be allocated to address the power supply crisis. Other issues that will be on the table include clean water and sanitation, water for industry and agriculture, national policies and strategies, generation and distribution of power to keep up with the increasing demand, climate change problems, and the drive for alternative sources of energy.

"The need for economic prosperity to match Africa’s population growth is putting pressure on all forms of commercial transport- roads, railways, air and on the sea ports," Jolly Tanitha, the summit director, said.
