Support for RE through Power Kick for Africa

The World Future Council (WFC) took its campaign to Accra, Ghana just in time for the World Cup to host a workshop with members of the African Renewable Energy Alliance (AREA) in hopes of promoting more policies, technologies, and financial mechanisms for the RE sector in Africa.

Around 30 representatives from governmental institutions from Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, and Europe shared their experience and knowledge on renewable energy for sustainable African development. An AREA Steering Committee was formed to meet in Q3 2010 to start organizing the next workshop scheduled for spring 2011.

In addition to the workshop, the WFC also showcased Africa’s first Solar Public Viewing, which enabled Ghanaians from a non-electrified village, Oboadaka, to view World Cup matches as a tool to promote RE in remote areas.

Wisdom Ahiataku, Head of Renewable Energy in the Ghana Ministry of Energy, said: “It is a challenge finding sustainable substitutes for fuel wood and charcoal to counter deforestation. This is why renewable, decentralized energy is absolutely essential for sustainable development.”
