Kenya plans to utilize its private sector in order to up its renewable energy production from 1,200 MW to 3,000 MW by 2013. Local radio station Capital FM quoted Prime Minister Raila Odinga as saying that its Renewable Energy and Adaptation to Climate Technologies special funding window will open the door for the private sector to receive up to about $1.49 million in interest-free loans and grants to fund energy projects.
The loans will only be available to profitable companies, including African and international businesses, and the projects must take place in one or more East African countries.
However, Kenya just released a new constitution which has posed a problem for architects of regional integration as concerns rise over the new stipulations that could undermine the East African Community (EAC). The new constitution has introduced new cabinet appointments, semi-autonomous county governments, and allowing national resources to be decided on local levels.
