Tideland Signal Ltd., part of marine aids-to-navigation manufacturer Tideland Signal Corp., has supplied a solar powered rotating beacon kit to the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority. The kit will automate the historic Jamestown lighthouse in Accra making it Tidelands’ fifth lighthouse conversion contract along the Ghanaian coast.
Tideland TRB-400 rotating beacons, ML-300 lanterns, and 15 meter GRP towers were supplied in 2005 for the deep-water port of Takoradi and for the lighthouses at Axim (Bobowasi Island), Cape Three Points, and Sekondi (Fort Orange).
The Jamestown lighthouse will have the company’s TRB-220 rotating beacon, solar regulator, 20W solar array and mounting kit charging two 12V batteries. This will enable to lighthouse to produce beams for up to 16 nautical miles when the installation is complete. The project, with the lighthouse originally built in 1871, will serve the oldest neighborhood in Accra.
