The Clean Technology Fund (CTF) will give South Africa $85 million to fund renewable energy projects, including cogeneration projects.
CTF listed an advertisement in local newspaper Business Day offering $50 million to fund wind and solar projects and $35 million for cogeneration plants which use waste energy and gas to generate power.
South Africa has about 2,000 MW of cogeneration potential, but the industry’s growth has been met with several obstacles such as funding and regulatory guidelines. Last year a former regional manager at paper maker Sappi Dave Long said that despite a battle lasting years the industry has not been able to sell any cogenerated power so far.
