The World Bank has announced plans to fund 30 GW of new power generation in Africa over the next five years. The Bank’s African energy specialist Reynold Duncan said, "We are not going to finance everything ourselves, but how we can help leverage financing for that 30 GW of additional capacity."
Duncan said that the Bank was looking into the Grand Inga hydropower scheme, but gave no details as to how the organization would be involved.
With all the promising projects breaking ground or in the pipeline for the continent, it is a little surprising that the World Bank would look into the Grand Inga as controversy continues to surround its status and progress. The project reportedly failed after the DRC decided to take it on alone, instead of the joint efforts initially planned by southern African countries.
