Uganda has just received an extra 6 MW of power feed to its electricity grid as Kakiira Sugar Works (KSW) started sending power to the national grid. According to the company’s General Manager Richard Orr in an interview with the Daily Monitor, KSW is producing 9 MW of power and exporting six of that to the national grid.
KSW generates power from sugar cane residues and plans to produce up to 21 MW by the project’s final stages. Orr said that increased and sustained export of the power generated from the sugar cane biogases can only occur if there is consistent supply of sugar cane to the factory.
Uganda currently requires about 350 MW of power, unfortunately the current supply stands at only 240 MW leading to the constant need to ration power supplies.
The estimated $20 million power project employs about 130 workers.
