Although the country touted that its first solar power unit would be online by the end of 2010, Egypt is now preparing to debut Africa’s first integrated solar combined cycle (ISCC) plant. It will operate at night as a conventional natural gas combined cycle, to which the contribution of the solar power hours will be added during the day, operating as a hybrid combined cycle (HCC) of gas and solar power.
The plant in Kuraymat will include a solar capacity of 20 MW of the 140 MW produced. The new plant, totaling $460 million in investments, is expected to produce 3,000 tons per annum of polysilicon to produce solar cells.
