South Africa Eyes the Nuclear Alternative

Eskom, South Africa’s state utility company is looking to build another nuclear power plant and has asked France’s Areva and US-based Westinghouse to submit bids. According to Eskom the new plant would be the first of six it has on the books for construction.

Eskom is looking at many different alternatives to solve its growing energy crisis and nuclear energy is one of its options.

The company said it is looking at 2010 for construction to begin and a start up for power generation targeted at 2016.
