Tanzanian Utility Looks to SAPP for Power

The Tanzania Electric Supply Co. (Tanesco) is considering the option to acquire power from the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), according to the utility’s general manager Stephen Mabada.

He said that the project would surround an interconnection scheme from Zambia’s grid to Kenya and other Nile Basin Initiative countries. Then it would run through the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydropower project to link all member states of the East African Power Pool (EAPP).

“We also have medium-term plans, which, when implemented, would see projects developed to meet the increasing demand for electricity locally and regionally during the next 25 years.  According to the national power system master plan of 2009, electricity demand is expected to reach 5,830 MW by 2033,” he added.
