Moroccan and Algerian relations have been strained for many years over the Western Sahara land dispute. The border has been closed for 15 years, but there is a renewed hope that it will soon reopen. It has been reported that Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is considering reopening the border after discussions with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah.
Despite tensions, Morocco has been Algeria’s largest trading partner in Africa, with trade volumes between the countries exceeding $570 million. Business leaders from Algeria and Morocco have asked for the border to be reopened for several years. This could also impact the tourism industry as well. Previously, many Algerians vacationed in Tunisia and with its current interim government and uncertainty, Morocco is the next destination based upon geographical proximity.
Another economic driver beneficial to both countries as a result of renewed relations would be their energy sector. Morocco could lend a helping hand to Algeria for proposed RE projects while also partnering with Algerian companies helping facilitate a technology transfer.
