ContourGlobal Ups Rwanda’s Power Generation

US-company ContourGlobal LLC will begin producing power from methane gas extracted at Rwanda’s Lake Kivu after funding for the plant was secured. The company’s Rwandan subsidiary KivuWatt Ltd. will generate 25 MW of electricity after commissioning of the facility in July 2012, according to country manager Jarmo Gummerus.

Gummerus told Bloomberg, “By extracting the gases out of the lake we will prevent the overturn of the lake.”

However, Rwanda expected to see the first 25 MW of the $325 million methane gas project connected to the grid by October 2010. The end of 2012 was supposed to see the completion of the project, producing 100 MW. Funding had been delayed while foreign investors waited for a World Bank safety environmental impact assessment. Finally on March 31, the Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) approved the insurance with foreign direct investments expected to come into play in the upcoming weeks.
