Botswana has announced that it will begin an aggressive feed-in tariff (FIT) program by March 2012 to promote the use of renewable energy.
Currently importing 72% of its power from South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom, the southern African nation will pay renewable energy suppliers for generating electricity into the national grid. Independent power projects (IPPs) will begin at 5 MW and any larger project must be implemented through power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Botswana Power Corp.
"We are presenting the final report in November. So we are going to set an office in parallel because we know it is going to be approved. We are looking at end of March next year," Benoni Erskine, Director of Energy at the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, told Reuters.
