Despite Warnings, Ghana Aims for Nuclear

Ghana is still preparing to continue its nuclear electricity plant despite warnings from the International Atomic Energy Agency and other nuclear energy experts.

The Ghana Nuclear Electricity Plant is expected to generate power by 2018 with the Director General of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Prof. Edward Akaho said that the only obstacle remaining was the political support. If there is political will, then strategies can be developed to meet the task," he said. "In terms of regulation Parliament needs to enact a law to establish the Ghana Nuclear Regulatory Authority to be independent of the GAEC.”

The existing reactor at Kwabenya will not be used for electricity generation, but instead it will remain as a research center to also facilitate the plant’s establishment. Currently South Africa is the only nation in Africa using nuclear power to generate electricity. While Nigeria has identified four locations that would be suitable for a nuclear plant, it has recently announced nuclear energy as being placed on its backburner.
