Africa Complains Copenhagen/Cancun Funding is Nonexistent

The COP conferences (Copenhagen and Cancun) saw funds created for developing nations to jump start renewable energy projects, but Africa is still falling short.

Developed countries are complaining that Africa has not created bankable projects that qualify for funding while developing countries are complaining that the promised funding is unobtainable.

At the World Economic Forum on Climate Change, Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga urged African countries to come up with projects that fall under the requirements. He said that the continent should explore other projects in geothermal, solar, and wind power and to submit them for possible funding under the climate change deals.

Other African leaders like South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma and Gabon’s Ali Bongo Ondiba said that the next climate change discussions scheduled to be held in Cape Town would need to have more tangible results. Zuma called for a united coalition by Africa ahead of the next climate change meetings.
