The Sierra Leone government and Joule Africa have signed a $750-million agreement to complete the Bumbuna hydropower project. The project was launched in 1975, but faced delays as a result of the country’s civil war. The first phase was completed in 2009 providing 50 MW of power.
Joule Africa will provide between $625 million to $750 million over five years for the completion of phase two, with initial estimates showing the hydropower plant’s producing capacity at 400 MW. “We shall spend $3.5 million in the next six months on pre-feasibility studies,” said Joule Africa spokesman Patrick Beckley.
