Ghana’s Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology Sherry Ayitey said that Parliament is working on passing a renewable energy bill to help the private sector generate energy from waste. She said that the bill aims to stop the government’s monopoly as being the sole supplier of energy, and will create a better haven for private companies to invest in the country’s energy sector. “These companies can establish other energy generation supplies which they can sell based on an agreement to district and municipal authorities,” said the Minister.
Ayitey added that the program “Ghana Goes Green (3G)” will help younger Ghanaians find jobs in the renewable energy sector. She said that the country can develop energy through total recycling of waste which could provide electricity to power machines and domestic appliances. “A green economy is now the answer to help especially developing nations to come out of their economic crisis,” she said.
