France’s nuclear energy giant Areva and Iberdrola Renewables has signed a MoU to develop offshore wind projects in France. This follows the government’s plan to reach 6 GW by 2020, and the partners will attempt to grab two of France’s five offshore zones offered in the first round of bidding.
Under the agreement, Areva will supply the turbines that will be used and Iberdrola will develop the offshore farms. Areva will also play on Iberdrola’s experience being the largest wind energy company in the world with a pipeline of around 10,000 MW in offshore wind projects throughout Europe. While Areva is not as well-known for its wind sector, it has about 600 MW of orders for its latest wind turbine technology, the M5000. The company said that it would have an installed base of over 120 new turbines operating in Europe by 2014.
