Kenya isn’t the only African country that Germany has its eye on, but could the EU powerhouse’s focus on renewable energy be a ploy to obtain more oil and gas exports?
The country’s Chancellor Angela Merkel made pit stops in Angola and Nigeria to discuss oil and gas as well as German-made renewable energy products. Germany unveiled a new policy in June that shifted the emphasis away from selfless development aid and placed more focus on German interests in obtaining oil and gas. Additionally, Germany announced that it would abandon its nuclear program and is already experiencing increased problems with electricity generation.
Merkel will complete her three-nation tour on July 14 with a visit to Africa’s largest oil producing nation, Nigeria. Allegations continue to run rampant on China’s involvement in Africa’s renewable energy sector with many claiming the Asian country really seeks to gain a larger foothold on the continent’s natural resources. German investment throughout the continent is high, but the country could be on its way to giving China, the US, and others tough competition.
