Following on the heels of the state-owned utility Nampower’s support for a grid upgrade, Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy announced it will give about $200 million for the Tsumkwe Energy Project to fund the rehabilitation and expansion of the grid.
The partially-funded European Union project, implemented by the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, NamPower, and Otjozondjupa Regional Council, expects to commission a 200-kW solar diesel hybrid power plant in September. Currently, Tsumkwe has nearly 80 solar water heaters with its power generation comprising a 350-kVA diesel generator that feeds electricity into the grid for about 10 hours day.
