EU energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger said that North African renewable energy could be the gateway for the EU to not only increase its ties to the region, but also create energy independence. "We need a pan-European strategy if we want to secure our energy supply at an affordable level," Oettinger said at a renewable energy conference. "At the same time this is our chance to support a peaceful recovery of the economy in the respective countries and also to overcome cultural differences."
The commissioner showed his disdain for the current energy prices in Germany – the EU’s economic powerhouse – saying that should prices continue on this scale, many manufacturers would move production to Eastern Europe or Asia.
