US farmers have begun growing the first genetically modified corn plants that are grown specifically as biofuel feedstock. The crop was planted on a 5,000-acre site in the US state of Kansas, developed by a Swiss pesticide company Syngenta. The corn has an added gene which expedites the breakdown of starch into ethanol.
Some are complaining that the crop could divert more corn for energy production which could lead to a worsening food crisis. In addition, the food industry has voiced concerns that the manufacturing of this crop could create a cross-contamination for those used for human consumption.
The food versus fuel debate will not subside any time soon. However, what is going to play out: energy independence and higher food prices or stabilized food markets and the uncertain energy fluctuations?
