Although 2010 was not a strong year for the wind energy sector, H1 2011 has proven to show momentum. The worldwide wind capacity reached 215,000 MW at the end of June with 18,405 MW of that total added in the first six months of 2011. China, US, Germany, Spain, and India represented 74% of the global wind capacity, but new markets are emerging including Venezuela, Honduras, and Ethiopia.
In H2 2011, 25,500 MW of wind energy is expected to be added which would bring new annual installations to 43,900 MW compared to 37,642 MW in 2010. Stefan Gsänger, WWEA secretary general, said: “On the one hand, it is very encouraging that new countries are coming up. On the other hand, we need more support on the national as well as on the international level.”
