Release
Only two months after the international release of ISO 50 001, the Energy Management Standard, Energy Cybernetics in conjunction with DQS launched the first ISO 50 001 course on the shores of Port Elizabeth in August 2011.
It is encouraging that many of the delegates’ organizations already made a start to become energy efficient, have effectively reduced their reliance on the grid by the required 10%, and are now seeking further opportunities for energy savings. The need to comply with legislation is driving the demand from top management to manage energy use so that ISO 50 001 certification can be achieved along with the various environmental standards.
Energy efficiency responsibility within organizations seems to be scattered throughout various departments. Delegates from the various automotive industries in the region attended and ranged from environmental managers experienced in ISO 14 001 to plant engineers and energy department personnel that hold the portfolio implementing energy efficiency and sustainable development practices. A misconception prevailed that an energy manager is a temporary position within organizations and once savings have been achieved there is no further service required. However, ISO 50 001 requires documentation, continuous training and management in the same manner than financial accounting systems.
Energy management forces you to look at how much energy you use, where you are using it, what drives the high usage areas and equipment, whom within your organisation influences your energy use, and which areas and systems warrant further investigation. To equip yourself with the knowledge to start the implementation of ISO 50 001 in your organisation, attend the next Energy Management System
Implementation course at Emperors Palace, Gauteng from 24 to 25 October 2011.
