Government Official Affirms RE Target will be Met

Despite delays, a senior government official in South Africa expressed confidence that the new bidding process for renewable energy will help the country meet the goal of 3,725 MW by 2016.

About 320 developers hailing from South Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia have expressed interest in green energy projects in South Africa to date. "We see the process is still on track. As much as we have seen who is bidding and how much work needs to be done, we are convinced that this will be done on time," said Nelisiwe Magubane, the director general at the Department of Energy.

If the latest renewable energy goal is met, the 3,725 MW will be added to the existing national supply of nearly 41,000 MW.
