Iran now has power derived from its first nuclear power plant. The Bushehr nuclear power facility, with a $1-billion price tag, was developed by a deal struck between Iran and Russia.
Russia will provide the plant’s uranium-filled fuel rods empowering the plant to hit a production capacity of 1,000 MW.
The Bushehr agreement was first struck in 1992 with original operation in 1999, but the plant saw a series of delays as a result of political instability and financial setbacks. The plant is currently generating between 350 MW to 400 MW, about 40% of the reactor’s total capacity, and is expected to reach full capacity by 2012.
