Ugandan Opposition Leader Pleas for Rescue

Uganda’s main opposition party leader Kizza Besigye has requested help from the international community after being detained at his home.

Police arrested Besigye on October 18 after he attempted to participate in the “Walk to Work” demonstrations and is currently being forced to remain in his home. Besigye said that over 100 police surrounded his home illegally restricting access. The police said the confinement was preventative detention. Protests began in April and May over high prices and political corruption.

Meanwhile, the first troops out of about 100 US military personnel have arrived in Uganda to advice and assist regional governments combating the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
