Masdar could be ready to extend a helping hand to aid Rwanda’s renewable energy efforts. The East African country’s president Paul Kagame visited Abu Dhabi to gain further insight into Masdar City and Masdar Institute for Science and Technology.
Dr. Sultan Ahmad Al Jaber, Chief Executive of Masdar, said: “And in line with the directions of the Emirati leadership, we welcome exploring areas of possible collaboration with the like-minded countries. Such partnerships will encourage the global efforts aiming to secure the energy security, achieve sustainable development, and develop solutions to mitigate climate change.”
Kagame added, “It is clear that the Masdar’s progress in the renewable and sustainable energy field will not only benefit the region but the entire world." The UAE has reportedly said $100 billion of private sector investment would flow into the country’s alternative energy sector by 2020. And with that, the UAE is gearing to participate more in East Africa and help transfer some of its renewable energy know-how. In late-March, the UAE and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) announced how they had increased bilateral relationships with COMESA comprising 52% of the UAE’s total trade with Africa within the first 10 months of 2010.
