US Navy Vet Uses Solar to Increase Employment

Retired from the US Navy, Charles Byers began a renewable energy business in hopes to create jobs in New York state. Pleasant Valley Energy LLC is one of many companies that received support from the US government’s program helping to assist disabled veterans.

Byers secured a five-year contract with the federal government that will allow his company to provide solar products to the military and federal agencies. He anticipates that sales will reach $100,000 in the first year, $500,000 in the second year, and $1 million in the third year of operations.

The company specializes in design, consulting, installation, and distribution of commercial wind, solar, geothermal, LED lighting, and power metering systems.

The US military has been incorporating renewable energy into their operations and even highlight efforts on individual branch websites. In May 2010, the Marine Corp. tested an energy system in Morocco that used solar power to purify water, light tents, and power equipment. The Air Force is also looking for ways to decrease its crude dependency for its fighter jets, cargo planes, and daily operations. Pike Research said that US military agencies worldwide are continuously investing more on renewable energy technology, expected to grow from $1.8 billion in 2010 to $26.8 billion by 2030.
