Malawi Swears in 1st Female President

Former vice president, Joyce Banda was expelled from the ruling Democratic Progressive party two years ago after voicing concerns over president Bingu wa Mutharika’s son taking control; however, on April 10 Banda was sworn in as the first female president in Malawi after the sudden death of Mutharika.

Her first order of business included disposing of the chief of police Peter Mukhito as well as Information Minister Patricia Kaliati. Now Banda is looking into ways to boost the country’s frail economy which was severely crippled after Western donors withdrew funds over human rights violations.

Banda is the second female president after Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
