Windhoek signed an agreement with Invest Africa Energy Services for a PPP that will establish a 250-MW solar power plant. Dr. Alfred Gerald Young, an American living in Namibia, is the majority shareholder in the company that will help bring more renewable energy to the southern African country.
Expected to be operational by 2013, Invest Africa Energy Services has established partnerships with power utilities and US engineering firms while also receiving funding from the US government. The factory is expected to train and employee 3,500 local workers who will also attend special training courses in collaboration with Polytechnic of Namibia.
