Developing Markets to Overtake Solar Industry

The European PV Industry Association (EPIA) released a report that said the world’s solar power generating capacity will grow by 200-400% with developing markets overtaking Europe’s market stronghold. China and India are expected to grow at exponential rates followed by southeast Asia, Latin American, the Middle East, and North Africa according to the report’s outlook until 2016.

Global installed PV capacity is expected to have risen to between 207.9 GW and 342.8 GW in 2016, depending on the level of political support, from 69.7 GW in 2011, the report said. This year, the world’s total PV capacity is expected to rise to between 90 and 110 GW, EPIA’s Secretary General Reinhold Buttgereit said.

However, manufacturers are expected to see a downturn as prices decrease and competition continues to grow. Prices along the entire supply chain are expected to fall by 10-15% this year after about 60% year on year falls registered in Q1 2012, according to Stephan De Haan, PV analyst at IHS.
