Zambia Seeks Hydropower from Mozambique

Zambia is currently in negotiations to receive hydroelectricity from the Cahora Bassa dam, located in western Mozambique, according to the latest issue of the Maputo daily Noticias.

Chairman of the Board, Paul Muxanga, of Hydroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), the dam operating company, did not reveal how much power would be sold to Zambia because negotiations have not reached that stage yet. “We are negotiating the supply of a certain quantity of power to Zambia,” said Muxanga. This could involve the construction of a new transmission line from the dam town of Songo to the Zambian border.

Cahora Bassa produces 2,075 megawatts (MW), of which, 1,350 MW flow to South Africa, 400 MW to Mozambique, 200 MW to Zimbabwe, and 35 to 40 MW to Botswana
